Myths & Misconceptions about Employer Health Plans

Key Objectives

This seminar will cover: - How most health plan solutions will inevitably drive up costs for employers and employees - Challenges companies encounter in effectively managing health plans and why - How to “beat the system” by using your data in a way the industry cannot - The only kind of wellness program that works and why it has nothing to do with wellness - Why you shouldn’t trust the solutions the industry is providing for increased Rx costs

Although many popular ideas about medical plans are based on truths, the complicated issues involved are often misunderstood or oversimplified to the point of being false or misleading. This seminar seeks to provide a deeper understanding of how many decisions plan sponsors make often have unforeseen and detrimental consequences to their costs, recruitment and retention.

Dave Ross

Director of Underwriting & Benefits Strategy at Brown & Brown

In a past life, Dave worked as an Underwriting Strategist at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota where he designed pricing methodologies that satisfied Blue Cross Blue Shield’s strategic objectives. During his tenure, Dave acted as an internal liaison between actuarial, underwriting and sales and assisted with BCBS’s lobbying efforts to expand the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) marketplace. Today, Dave spends much of his time traveling around the country educating employers and legislative bodies on the many counter intuitive and nuanced components of effective health care cost management. A true educator, Dave uses a whiteboard to illustrate how many employers have been and continue to be mislead by the industry resulting in unsustainably increasing health care costs for both employers and their employees. Dave is the Director of Underwriting Services at Brown & Brown, where he develops and maintains financial tools and methodologies that improve customers’ ability to effectively manage their employer sponsored health plans. Dave’s role keeps him actively involved in managing key accounts, representing more than 300,000 members across the country.
