Demystifying High Tech Hiring

Key Objectives

1. Work with hiring managers to compile competency profiles for target high-tech positions. 2. Create an interview rubric to screen and rank candidates. 3. Identify qualified candidates to present to hiring managers.

In today’s complex high-tech ecosystem, hiring managers and candidates expect that HR professionals understand the competencies of high-tech roles and have the ability to screen and rank candidates against job requirements, organizational goals, and team needs. Dr. Karl Schubert, Associate Director, Data Science Program at the University of Arkansas and Judith Tavano, SHRM-SCP, have teamed up to ensure that HR professionals are equipped to effectively vet and qualify high-tech candidates.

Karl Schubert, Ph.D.

Professor of Practice, Assoc. Dir. Data Science at University of Arkansas

Karl D. Schubert, Ph.D., FIET Karl Schubert is a Professor of Practice and serves as the Associate Director for the Data Science Program for the University of Arkansas College of Engineering, the Sam M. Walton College of Business, and the Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences. His research interests include data science and analytics, innovation, technology, and interdisciplinary project-based active learning methodologies. As part of his current role, Karl is leading a State-wide multi-college faculty and administration workgroup, with the Arkansas Center for Data Science as the Education & Workforce Development Research Theme for the NSF EPSCoR grant, to develop a consistent and collaborative interdisciplinary multi-college B.S. and Associate degree, and certificate program in Data Science, and led a team to develop a State-wide High School path for Data Science for the Arkansas Department of Education officially adopted December 2020, and he is developing an interdisciplinary multi-college Innovation Curriculum. Prior to his appointment at the University, in senior-level corporate roles that include CIO, CTO, Global SVP of Engineering, and General Manager, Karl has developed a steadfast reputation for driving strategic business growth and technology innovation. He has strong experience in interdisciplinary data science, innovation and technology, and lifecycle management, operations, global business, through working in companies including IBM, Dell, Lifetouch, midrange companies and start-ups and his own company, TechNova Consulting, LLC. Dr. Schubert has authored / co-authored three books and has been awarded patents for early work in storage systems architecture, storage area networks, data analysis methods, touch screen technologies, and other technology areas. He is a graduate (B.S. and Ph.D.) of the University of Arkansas, an elected member of the Arkansas Academy of Chemical Engineers, a 2008 recipient of the UofA College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award, was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET) in 2015 and inducted as a charter member of the University of Arkansas Academy of Computer Science and Computer Engineering in 2017. Karl is a Senior Member of the IEEE, Senior Member of ACM, and a Senior Member of IISE. He was also recently served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates (NAMEPA) Inc. and represented NAMEPA on The Carpentries Equity Council. Dr. Schubert lives in Tontitown, AR with his wife Kathryn, and their four-year old son, Tucker.

Judith Tavano, SHRM-SCP

Talent Development Specialist (Ret) at University of Arkansas

Judith Tavano, SHRM-SCP, is a long-time HR professional with extensive experience in all aspects of HR. During her decades of success in high tech hiring, Judith helped build a number of highly recognized high tech brands worldwide. Judith is known for her long association with the University of Arkansas, her multi-generational workforce workshops, leadership development, curriculum design, and veteran workplace advocacy. Judith holds a B.A./M.A. from Simmons University, Boston, Massachusetts and a Certificate in Human Resource Management from Bentley University, Boston, Massachusetts. Judith is a current member, and former board member, of NOARK, the northwest Arkansas Chapter of the Society for Human Resources.
